FLY Calendar

The SSAA Fly Shoot is an exciting shooting discipline exclusively for rifle enthusiasts. This unique competition tests both precision and accuracy, combining the challenge of tight groupings with high-scoring hits. Fly Shoot features two primary classes: Rimfire (shot at 200 yards) and Centrefire (shot at 500 metres), with competitors aiming to keep five-shot groups as close to the fly-shaped X-ring as possible for maximum points.

SSAA Brisbane also shoots the Supplementary 300m Centrefire match each month.

Firearms and Classes

• Rimfire Class: Any .22LR rimfire rifle with a maximum weight of 7.711kg (17lb).
• Centrefire Class:
  • Light Gun Class: Rifles up to .49 calibre with a maximum weight of 7.711kg (17lb), including bipods.
  • Heavy Gun Class: Rifles up to .49 calibre with no weight limit, though they must be manually lifted onto the bench.

Targets, Scoring, and Matches

• Target Design: The Fly target measures 8.54″ (21.7cm) in diameter, with a central scoring ring of 1.77″ (4.5cm) containing a 30mm fly-shaped X-ring worth 10 points. Surrounding scoring rings range in value from 1 to 9, with a width of 0.35″ (0.9cm) each.
• Course of Fire: Each match consists of five targets, with competitors allowed eight rounds per target—five for scoring and three for sighting on a separate sighting target.
• Scoring: Fly Shoot uses best edge scoring, where if a bullet touches the border of a higher scoring ring, the higher score is awarded. Both group size and score count toward the final result.
