Applying for a Category A/B (Rifle/Shotgun) Licence in Qld

Step 1: Establish a Genuine Reason

To obtain a Category A & B Firearms Licence, you need a genuine reason. By becoming a member of SSAA (Sporting Shooters' Association of Australia), you can list Sports & Target Shooting and Recreation & Hunting as your genuine reasons, as SSAA is an approved body under Queensland law.

You can apply for membership by either of the following options

 

Step 2: Complete a Safety Course

Attend a 11029NAT Weapons Act Safety Course. This course is a mandatory requirement for obtaining your licence.

  • Please note, you will need a Unique Student Identifier (USI) to enrol in the safety course. You can apply for a USI online USI WEBSITE

 

Step 3: Receive Your Statement of Attainment

Once you complete the safety course, you’ll receive a Statement of Attainment, which confirms you’ve successfully passed the course. You will need this statement when applying for your licence.

 

Step 4: Submit Your Licence Application

With your Statement of Attainment, photos, and membership details ready, you can apply for your firearms licence. You have two options:

  1. Online Application: The preferred and faster method is through the Queensland Police Service's online application system CLICK HERE.
  2. In-Person Application: Alternatively, you can lodge your application at participating Australia Post outlets CLICK HERE

 

Step 5: Choose Your Firearm

Once your licence is approved and arrives, it's time to choose the right firearm for your needs. Different types of shooting, known as disciplines, require different firearms. We recommend trying out the various disciplines offered by your branch before deciding on the firearm that best suits you.

Step 6: Apply for a Permit to Acquire (PTA)

When your licence has been approved, and you have received the licence card, you are able to aquire your own equipment. 

Before purchasing a firearm, you must apply for a Permit to Acquire (PTA) from Queensland Police. The PTA is required for each firearm you wish to acquire.

  • The PTA application can be completed online via the Queensland Police Service website. CLICK HERE
  • You will need your firearms licence number to apply.
  • Once your PTA is approved, you will be able to purchase and collect your chosen firearm.
