Firearm Muzzle Velocity & Energy Limits at SSAA Brisbane

Our range approval allows firearms up to specific muzzle velocity and energy limits. If your load stays within both of the following limits, you may shoot it here.

However, due to noise concerns, we have reduced these limits during casual practice and sighting-in to comply with council noise regulations:

🔹 Casual Practice / Sighting-In Limits:

  • Maximum Muzzle Velocity: 3500 fps (1250 m/s)
  • Maximum Muzzle Energy: 3200 ft-lb (5670 J)

For more details click here.

During State & National Championships, these limits may be increased to the maximums allowed by our range approval if required for the competition:

🔹 Competition Limits:

  • Maximum Muzzle Velocity: 4100 fps (1250 m/s)
  • Maximum Muzzle Energy: 4182 ft-lb (5670 J)

Examples of Prohibited Calibres:
Firearms exceeding these limits cannot be used at our range, including:
🚫 .338 Lapua
🚫 .460 Steyr
🚫 .408 Cheytac
🚫 .416 Barrett

The use of muzzle brakes is restricted to bench 12 or above on the concrete benches. This is a noise mitigation strategy we have put in place.

Below is a table showing some common calibers and some basic ballistic information to help you decide if they can be used at the SSAA Brisbane Range.
