Safety & Competency Training program
THIS IS A TRAINING PROGRAM FOR SSAA BRISBANE PISTOL SECTION MEMBERS ONLY. IT IS NOT A TRY-SHOOTING EXPERIENCE. |
This program is designed to help new, unlicensed shooters during the initial phase of their Pistol Section Membership fulfill the necessary requirements for their license application and complete the Competency and Safety Training Program. The course includes a variety of skills that can be applied in competitions at this range. As this shoot is exclusively for unlicensed shooters, each participant must have a licensed supervisor with them at the firing line while handling firearms. The Club provides a team of experienced volunteers to support and guide participants through this training.
SSAA Brisbane has developed the Trainee Shoot Program to improve the management of the long-standing Competency Program. This ensures that all members receive consistent training in the safe handling of firearms.
Trainee Pistol Shoots are held on the following days each month:
- 1st Thursday starting at 6:00 pm (arrive by 5:30 pm)
- 3rd Thursday starting at 6:00 pm (arrive by 5:30 pm)
- 4th Wednesday starting at 6:00 pm (arrive by 5:30 pm)
Bookings open at 6:00 pm, two days before each shoot.
When booking a Trainee Shoot, ensure you complete the sessions in the following required order:
- 4x Rimfire Shoots
- 3x Centerfire Revolver Shoots
- 2x Centerfire Semi-Auto Shoots
You must complete all the required shoots in each section before moving on to the next. To attend each subsequent shoot, you must meet the eligibility criteria for that section.

Please book only the competency class you are currently participating in (as outlined in the table above), as bookings, ammunition, and available positions are managed through the online booking system. We appreciate your cooperation with this process. Refunds may not be issued for incorrect bookings, as they can hinder other members from securing their spots and progressing through the program.
While you may not be able to secure a position for every session, please remember that you have six months to complete a minimum of three shoots to fulfill the requirements for your license application. Additionally, with a further two months for processing license applications, you will have ample time to complete the nine competency shoots before purchasing your first handgun.
At induction, all new members are offered a one-time pre-booking for their first Trainee Shoot, which takes place on the 1st Thursday of the month.
Due to limited positions available, not all members will be able to secure a spot for each session. We recommend checking back on the morning of the shoot to see if any positions have become available due to cancellations.
